Well, Halloween is over for another year and though we had fun, we are glad this dental doomsday has passed. This year, we have some tips for those parents out there who have the temptation to save your waistbands and throw away all the candy. Is anyone else’s kitchen being held hostage by mountains of Halloween candy? Do bags of chocolate and gummies overflowing onto counter tops sound familiar? I mean, you could keep eating it, but your pants will likely get tight before making a dint. So what do you do? Well, before you go trashing your kid’s hard earned loot, consider a few ways to actually put that stuff to use.
Donate it. Organizations such as Operation Shoebox ,Operation Gratitude and Any Soldier accept candy donations for troops overseas. Also try local shelters, soup kitchens, and fire departments..
Use it for baking. Mix candy into your baked goods. Or use it for toppings on your favorite cake.
Freeze it. Rumor has it that candy will keep for a year. Take it out on Thanksgiving or during the holidays when guests stop by. Throughout the year, you can also add it to ice cream and plain cookie dough.
Add it to your coffee. It’s sure cheaper than Starbucks.
Decorate your house with it. Your gingerbread house, that is.
Take it to work. Candy in the workplace is always a hit.
Save it for Christmas stockings. Who says candy wrappers have to be red and green?
Make your own Advent calendar. Leftover candies are a perfect holiday countdown marker.
Get crafty. Try making a candy bouquet. Treat bags for a party. Or fill a pinata.
Use it for game pieces. This makes for great clean up.
Use it as a learning tool. Let kids practice counting using Skittles or M&Ms.
Or, if none of these appeal to you … you can always eat it. Truth is, no matter what you do with your candy, anything beats wasting it. So before you dump those calories in the trash, take a look at what your kids collected and try something creative.
