Getting Dental Veneers Online

I have some spots on my teeth and want to get a nicer smile. While I understand that porcelain veneers with my dentist would be better, they are pretty pricey. I’m wondering if it would be a good idea to get those online dental veneers?

Alex

Dear Alex,

It would help if I knew what type of spots you were talking about. If they are recent white spots that have turned up, they are likely decalcification spots, which are precursors to tooth decay. You want to make sure you are getting adequate care for your teeth in addition to improving their appearance.

The only kind of dental veneers you can get online are removable. The best brand of removable, dental veneers is snap-on smile. However, they do have to be done under the supervision of a dentist. They do get some complaints from patients who are disappointed with the results. I have found, however, that as long as a dentist lowers the patient’s expectations they end up satisfied. They will have an okay smile, not a stunning one. These are made from acrylic, not porcelain so the results will not be comparable.

Getting Veneers Online

The biggest problem with trying to do something like this online is the complications you run into without the help of a dentist. Not only will you have a lower quality result, but you might end up in pain.

These appliances don’t come in as a perfect fit. Your dentist has to make adjustments to the device when it arrives to ensure it fits both securely and comfortably.

If you want to get removable veneers, I recommend going with Snap-on Smile through your dentist. In the meantime, start saving up for something that can provide you with a stunning smile such as porcelain veneers.

will a dental flipper make my teeth look straight?

I’m too old for braces, but the way my teeth stick out is really holding me back professionally. Is there a way if I put a dental flipper over my teeth it could make my teeth look straight?

Kimberly

Dear Kimberly,

Invisalign aligner
Invisalign: The adult solutions to braces

I think you are confusing a dental flipper with Snap-on Smile. A dental flipper is a temporary tooth replacement that clasps onto the adjacent teeth. It’s designed to be used while you are waiting on the completion of your permanent tooth replacement.

Snap-on Smile is a false tooth arch made of crystallized acetyl resin. It can snap over your teeth. Because this will add bulk to your teeth and you mentioned your teeth are already sticking out, I don’t think this would be a good solution for you. Your teeth would stick out even farther.

Invisalign: The Adult Orthodontic Solution

I know you said you’re too old for braces. As an adult, I wouldn’t want metal wires and brackets on my teeth either. Fortunately, you don’t have to.

Now we have what is the equivalent of invisible braces, called Invisalign. These use clear aligners instead of wires and brackets. These will straighten your teeth without anyone even knowing. They are invisible, even at a conversational distance.

Invisalign has an added benefit. The aligners can double as teeth whitening trays. Now, not only can you have straight teeth, but you can whiten them simultaneously. This is a two for one mini smile makeover. You’ll have a brand new smile you’ll be proud to share.

Snap on Smile for straight teeth

Will snap on smile make my teeth look straight? I’m too old for braces.

Cathy- Maine

Cathy,

Whether Snap-on Smile can make your teeth look straight, will depend on how your teeth need to look straight. If you have a large overbite, then it would make your smile stick out further.  If your teeth are a little crooked, then it will make them look straight. You need to know that while this will give you a decent smile, it will not give you a stunning smile like you would get with porcelain veneers.

You mentioned that you are too old for braces, but have you considered getting Invisalign? These will straighten your teeth with invisable aligners. No one will even know you are straightening your teeth.

Question about Snap-On Smile

Is there some kind of temporary dental appliance that gives the illusion of straighter, whiter teeth? It fits over your teeth like a mouth guard would. What is something like that called? Is it expensive? Does it take a long time to be fitted for such a device, and does it hurt?

Alan in Sacramento

Dear Alan,

The dental apparatus you are referring to is called a “Snap-On Smile”, and it fits snuggly over your existing teeth. Such a device is used sometimes for a big event like a wedding, or by actors in the theater. Though it is not durable, it can improve your smile nicely for a short time. A Snap-On Smile is considered a very temporary smile makeover, and should not be confused with porcelain veneers or crowns.

It probably takes at least two weeks, maybe a little more, to complete the entire process to get a Snap-On Smile. A dentist will make a model of your teeth, which is then sent to a dental lab in New York where the appliances are manufactured. Your Snap-On Smile should be shipped to you about two weeks after the lab receives the model from your dentist.

When you receive your Snap-On Smile, no preparation is necessary for your teeth—the appliance just snaps into place. Expect the appliance to make your teeth look bulkier and larger, and remember that it needs to be cleaned after each time you eat.

We strongly recommend that you consult an expert cosmetic dentist to help you acquire such an appliance. He or she will help you get the best results.
