Cosmetic dentistry is general dentistry with an added element: Besides restoring the function of the teeth, it includes an emphasis on esthetics and smile design. And it goes beyond restoring to sometimes actually transforming a dark, crooked, or worn-out smile into one that is natural, youthful, beautiful, or vigorous. The characteristics of the smile design will vary from one individual to another, depending on facial characteristics of the person, the personality, and the image that person wishes to project.
